If you have ever asked a 7th-grade class "what did you infer?" and gotten blank stares, you already know the problem. We tell students to "read between the lines" as if the lines were never there — as if inference were a sixth sense some students have and others don't.
Inference is not a gift. It is a set of moves that can be named, modeled, and practiced. The five strategies below give students a structure for that work.
1. Anchor inference in the CBA framework
Most students hear "make an inference" as a single demand: do the thing. The problem is that inference is not one skill — it is a sequence of moves. The CBA framework — Comprehension, Before reading, During reading, After reading — gives you a way to scaffold the work explicitly.
Before reading, students activate schema and predict what the text might say or do. During reading, they track evidence for and against their predictions. After reading, they synthesize what they have inferred and evaluate how their thinking shifted. Each phase produces a different kind of inference: predictive, interpretive, evaluative. Naming the phase makes the cognitive demand visible.
Try this with a short story from the 7th-grade "The Weight of a Name" lesson. Before reading, students predict what the title means and whose voice they might hear. During reading, they collect two pieces of text evidence. After reading, they write a one-sentence inference that only uses evidence they marked. The result: inference becomes a procedure, not a vibe.
2. Teach "Say / Do / Mean"
"Say / Do / Mean" is the most powerful character-evidence protocol I know. Give students a simple three-column organizer. In the first column, they record something the character says (a direct quote). In the second, something they do (an action, a choice, a behavior). In the third, what it means — the inference.
The protocol works because it forces students to ground every inference in observable evidence. They cannot simply assert that a character is "sad" or "angry" — they have to point to the quote or the action that supports that claim. It also surfaces the gap between what is explicit and what is implied, which is the entire territory of inference.
"Speaking Truth to Power" is built for this. The narrator raises her hand in class and asks why they never read poems by people who look like her — a small action that means something enormous about voice, courage, and belonging. Have students fill out the three columns for that moment, then do it again for the line "silence is a strange companion that fills your chest like water." Watch what happens to their inferences when the evidence is on the page.
3. Track character emotion across scenes
Seventh-graders can do something 5th-graders often cannot: hold a character's emotional arc in their head across an entire story. Mood arcs — the rise and fall of a character's feelings — are inference-rich territory. Students have to read between the lines of what a character does to figure out what they feel, then track how that feeling shifts.
Build a class mood arc on the board. After each scene, students add a label (a feeling word) and a citation that supports it. "I think Mei-Lin feels invisible here because the text says she 'worked at this — hours in front of the bathroom mirror, sanding down the edges of my vowels.'" The collective arc becomes visible, and students can see how a writer uses small details to build emotional logic.
This works especially well with "Between Two Worlds," where Mei-Lin/Melanie's emotional state shifts between home and school in almost every scene. Students map the arc in pairs, then compare their maps. Where they disagree is where the real inferential conversation begins.
4. Use question stems as scaffolds
If you want students to ask better questions, you have to teach them the sentence frames better questions are made of. Inference stems — repeatable sentence frames — turn a blank page into a structured thinking task, especially powerful in small groups during a close read.
Try a stem set like this during partner work:
"I think ___ because the text says ___."
"This word/phrase suggests that ___ because ___."
"At this point in the story, ___ is likely to ___ because ___."
"The contrast between ___ and ___ suggests ___."
"I used to think ___, but now I think ___ because ___."
Post the stems on the wall. Require students to use at least two during a close read. Require them to cite. The stems do the work of scaffolding the cognitive move so students can focus on the inference itself.
5. Short texts first, then long
Most 7th-grade inference work fails because we ask students to do inferential reading on texts that are too long. They get lost in plot and character before they reach the inferential layer. Flip the sequence: front-load inference on paragraphs, poems, and short excerpts. Then move to longer texts once students have the moves in their hands.
A 14-line poem like "When the Pen Becomes a Microphone" gives students six or seven inferential moments in under 500 words. They can reread it three times in a class period and argue about what "a weapon" means in context. By the time they reach a full short story, the moves are muscle memory.
None of these strategies are new. What is new is treating inference as something we teach — explicitly, repeatedly, with named moves — rather than something students will pick up by osmosis. Pick one strategy this week. Use it on Monday. Use it again on Wednesday. That is the work.
